A friend of mine asked me to film their wedding; I don’t do that sort of thing, but I have camera junk so I said “sure.” This was the sample I sent them. They actually loved it. (It was a joke sample.) I now have somebody else that wants me to film a wedding for them. I bought camera junk so I could film cars. Why is this happening???

It goes along with, “You’ve got a pickup? Great! Can you help me move?”

I play trumpet professionally, and I’ve played for literally hundreds of weddings. By and large, every single one of them looked exactly the same. (I can’t speak for the receptions, since I never go, nor am I invited, but still, I’m sure they’re standard too.) But that 30-second video you posted made their wedding look like no wedding I’d ever seen before. It was unique. And that’s saying something, in an industry that that is saturated with photographers and videographers who are all doing the same damned thing. Ever been to a wedding expo? You should go sometime and compare what you did with what everybody else is doing. You may have actually found a niche. It may not be what you want to do, but it can pay well.

Hell the fuck no, I am not doing this for a living. (I hope.) HA! It looks different? That’s probably because I’ve never been to a wedding before and I made a sample video outside of all the YouTube tutorials I watched prior to filming. The weird thing is that the bride and groom fucking loved the sample but just wanted a “basic” video to show the family in addition to a video done by my own design.

Weddings are weird.

Weddings are weird. I do my level best to have nothing at all to do with anybody except the organist. I show up a little early, play, and GTFO.

I have hella expensive camera rigs, and I just refuse to film things for people unless I specifically express interest. Cars? Yes, all day long. Weddings, pets, children, family events? Nope. I work full time in the computer industry and I’m on call, I have plenty of reasons why I’m not going to take time off for filming a wedding...

It’s just not worth the headache...honestly, if my sister had asked me to film her wedding, I would have said no...

Whoa, sounds like we’re in a similar-ish boat. I do some IT things to make money as well but I also have some camera gear because I find a lot of enjoyment in the photography/videography aspect of things; mostly with cars. Wanna do stuff with featuredgarage.com ? It’s really nothing special at the moment, just something a friend and I do in our spare time. It would be a lot of fun to make it a “thing” at some point.

I do believe I’ve emailed either you or someone else about it in the past. Shoot me an email with some more info to [my username]@gmail.

I’m certainly interested.

I don't shoot videos so take this with a grain of salt. Sometimes you have to do the stuff you don't want to do, to afford the stuff that you do. Filming weddings, while incredibly boring and mundane, can pay the bills. Doing so will allow you the freedom to do the car stuff you do want to do. Granted, it is a black hole full of suck, but I could think of a lot worse ways to spend a day. At least you're getting paid. Think about all the other schmucks who went to the wedding. They aren't.

Haha great point, Stapleface (I dig the name). Everybody else that had to endure the heat during the wedding wasn’t being compensated. Unless you consider food a means of compensation.
